Back in the 1990s, Jilly Cooper’s terrifying version of Riders was released, and since then television has avoided its “bonkbusters” by critics who believe that Jilly Cooper’s novels are outdated and stupid This is far from the truth, Cooper satirically portrays the upper middle class of the Cotswolds with an iron wit and has always understood comedy, characters and funny plots. Now comes RIVALS from Disney, which boasts an all-star cast, and the good news is that it’s a great time, yes, it’s full of hot moments, boobs and asses, even the occasional Willie.
The changes are minor and actually reveal more of the period and politics
However, the triumph is that he has the budget and time to do justice to the feeling and spirit of the original book. Bella McLean is brilliant in the central role of Taga, and Alex Hassell is excellent as Rupert, a role that is impossible to choose because no one in history can be the character that Cooper created – part thief, part Adonis, part whimpering child.
He does a really commendable job
However, the real star of this is the ensemble of excellent character actors Emily Atack, Danny Dyer, Catherine Parkinson, all of whom give career-best performances. The 80’s soundtrack is top notch and makes Rivals a real Disney triumph.
I really liked it
It’s fun, it’s frothy, but there’s a deeper undercurrent that elevates it above the classic film and gives hope that we’ll see much more from this team and this universe in the future.
