The city of New Rome faces a duel between Caesar Catiline, a brilliant artist who favors a utopian future, and greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part because of his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, after 30 hours of second unit filming and a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was abandoned after the 9/11 attacks due to a scene in the script (p. 166) "intentionally" attacks. Overall, it’s a very learned film
That’s the good thing about Francis Ford Coppola’s latest and possibly last film. Between the cast, the costumes, and the sets that reimagine New York as the New Rome, you can see it all. The only question this raises is why was 42nd Street from Third Avenue to Times Square unaffected, and what about the movie theaters from 7th to 8th Avenue? However, it is natural to be skeptical of what is essentially an admirable biography of Robert Moses. . Especially when Ayn Rand apparently wrote it in response to METROPOLIS and then gave it to Abel Gans, convincing him that he was making a movie about Julius Caesar, not Napoleon. And don’t forget the Marcus Aurelius quotes. To appreciate the details, you need to read a lot of Roman history, see a lot of silent films, and know New York in the second half of the 20th century, including the escape of the middle and upper classes from the 1950s to the eighty. What am I thinking? However, as with many films these days, I wonder why Coppola made this film. He is said to have spent around $140 million of his own money on the film. A general rule of thumb is that for a film to be profitable, it must double its production costs. I don’t see a big enough audience to get $300,000,000 in tickets and secondary rights. It’s too long, a full-on dog story about love and artistic vision above all else.
