Cabrini: We can serve our weakness or our purpose

After witnessing disease and poverty in the slums of New York, Italian immigrant Francesca Cabrini embarks on a daring journey to convince the hostile mayor to provide housing and healthcare to hundreds of orphans. The film was screened by the nuns of Mother Cabrini’s order, some of whom were in their 90s. At the end of the film, many of them were crying, with some shouting, “THAT’S Cabrini!” Archbishop Corrigan was not the son of poor, working-class Irish immigrants in New York City. Corrigan was born in New Jersey to Irish immigrants who owned a grocery and liquor store in Newark and were wealthy.

It’s an amazing story about the strength and faith of an Italian woman helping orphans while battling ethnic and gender discrimination. These hungry Italian orphans, whose parents have died of disease, live a worse life than the rats that infest “The Five Points,” a 19th-century neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York. Maria Francesca Cabrini and the Italian nuns who followed her to New York eventually open an orphanage, much to the displeasure of New York City Mayor Gould, played by John Lithgow.
Cabrini is skillfully directed by Mexican director Alejandro Gomez Monteverde, who also directed the excellent 2023 docudrama Sound of Freedom
Archbishop Corrigan of New York, played by David Morse, puts obstacles in the nuns’ way, as he does not want to anger the mayor or the wealthy citizens who view the Italians as scum, or Itakers as they call them. The archbishop eventually helps Cabrini find a home for her charges when she and the orphans are evicted from the fancy neighborhood they rent in an effort to silence them. However, as Cabrini’s health and strength fail due to a bout of tuberculosis, she encounters further obstacles as she attempts to open a much-needed hospital after a devastating factory explosion kills many adult immigrants and children. Cristiana Dell’Anna is an Italian actress I’ve never seen before, she is wonderful in the role of Sister Cabrini, this is one of those demanding emotional performances that a very talented actress needs to shine.

Of course there are other impressive supporting roles, I mentioned John Lithgow and David Morse, another highlight is Romana Maggiora Vergano who plays Vittoria, a young prostitute who Cabrini takes into her flock and who turns out to be her biggest supporter when the nun is at her lowest ebb. I can recommend Cabrini, it tells a little known inspirational story of a woman who, despite chronic illness and broken English, uses her entrepreneurial mind to build an empire of hope the likes of which the world has never seen. There were moments that reminded me of Wagner’s orchestral fantasies, but it is effective and does not detract from the film. There is also a treat for opera fans in Cabrini with Rolando Villazón in the role of a famous opera singer in Cabrini’s circle, as well as a brand new song entitled “Dare to Be” by Andrea Bocelli, sung with his daughter Virginia.
